Renting in Reality — Rent Tech Insights

Is the rental system working for Victorians?

Renting in Reality – Rent Tech Insights examines how digital tools and platforms are shaping the renting experience across Victoria. From applications to repairs and payments, rent tech is becoming embedded in everyday renting — but not all renters experience it equally.

This report explores:

  • how and when renters are required to use rent tech
  • how landlords and agents use these platforms
  • the impact of rent tech on transparency, accessibility and control.

This report is part of our new, four-part series, Renting in Reality, providing new data about what’s working and what needs to evolve in Victoria’s rental market.

Where to from here?

Renting in Reality provides a baseline for assessing whether our rental policies and cultural norms are working for everyday Australians.

CPRC has developed Australia’s first Renter Confidence Index to benchmark and track changes in renter experience and confidence over time.

This index can be applied across all Australian states and territories, providing a consistent national benchmark for renter confidence and experience.

CPRC welcomes the opportunity to work further on this issue with government, regulators, policy makers, academics and the community.

Next steps

This report forms part of four part series on reports examining Victoria’s rental system.

Building on Renters Insights, Landlords Insights, and Energy and Minimum Standards, this report continues the series, exploring how rent tech is shaping rental practices and renter experiences.

Together, these reports will provide a comprehensive picture of how the rental system is performing.

This methodology can serve as Australia’s ongoing benchmark for whether rental policy is delivering good outcomes.
