Unlike other comparable jurisdictions from around the world, Australia currently does not have a general prohibition on unfair business practices
Australian laws fail to protect consumers from unfair practices that coerce specific choices, exploit vulnerabilities or undermine autonomy. This event will ask, how would a general law against unfair practices work?
Jeannie is a Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne, teaching and researching in the areas of consumer protection and consumer banking law. Jeannie is co-director of the Centre for AI and Digital Ethics and an affiliate researcher with the Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision Making and Society.
Gerard is CEO of the Consumer Action Law Centre. Gerard is also the Chair of Consumers’ Federation of Australia, the peak body for consumer organisations in Australia, representing a diverse range of consumer groups, including most national consumer organisations.
Rod is currently Professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU, and Chair of the Competition Research Policy Network, Centre for Economic Policy Research, Paris.
From 2011 to March 2022 he was Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Chandni leads CPRC’s research stream on protecting consumers in a digital world. Her work to date includes exploring the consumer shift from the analogue towards the digital economy, the impact of deceptive and manipulative online design on Australian consumers and the key gaps that currently exist in Australia’s consumer protections.
