Renting in Reality – Renter Insights captures the experiences of Victorian renters, affording critical insights into the pressures, gaps and opportunities shaping Victoria’s current rental system. Through this research, CPRC has developed Australia’s first Renter Confidence Index to benchmark and track changes in renter experience and confidence over time.

Only 1 in 6 renters are very confident.
16% of renters have a confidence score of over 90, indicating good experiences in the market.
People with lower confidence scores are paying higher rents and facing financial difficulties
Four in five Victorian renters experienced at least one challenge over the past 12 months in relation to their rental arrangement (79%).
2 in 5 renters facing a challenge disengage by giving up, moving house or doing nothing and continuing to endure the situation (39%).
Financially struggling families scored lowest on the rental confidence index.
54% more likely to experience end of lease issues versus renters with no children

Renting in Reality provides a baseline for assessing whether our rental policies and cultural norms are working for everyday Australians.
CPRC has developed Australia’s first Renter Confidence Index to benchmark and track changes in renter experience and confidence over time.
This index can be applied across all Australian states and territories, providing a consistent national benchmark for renter confidence and experience.
